Pupils at the Freetown Cheshire Home are recipients of a goodwill gesture of a Sierra Leonean organization, DAUGHTERS OF SIERRA LEONE on the 24th September 2020. This charitable organization donated school items and food to the home at its Cline Town headquarter in Freetown in the presence of the pupils (beneficiaries), staff, parents and the media.
The donated school materials include school bags, exercise books, pencils and pens. The organization also donated 2 bags of 50kg rice and 5 gallons of palm oil to the home, targeting close to 100 kids. The Daughters of Sierra Leone organization was founded over a year ago by philanthropic diaspora Sierra Leonean, Rita Felleh Arah Kamara. It is a women-owned and operated forum to unite women from Sierra Leone, and to promote development and socially programs among women in society.

The Freetown Cheshire Home was established in 1961 as an abode and institution for the physically challenged persons, mostly kids and women. The home has continued to accommodate deformed and deprived kids over the years amidst constraints of resources.

Speaking on behalf of the founder, the head of the Sierra Leone team Mahawa Ibilola Kallon expressed delight to have visited the home to support the little they have with the kids. She explained that the organization has also been supporting women and kids in other countries, but noted that their focus is Sierra Leone. Mahawa further informed the audience that they came to know about the Cheshire home through a renown Journalist Mohamed Basiru Sanusi, popular as Ambassador Bash. According her, Bash gave them a clear picture of the challenges the home is facing. She promised that her organization will continue to support the home.

Receiving the donation from Daughters of Sierra Leone, the Manager of the Freetown Cheshire Home, Mr. Ibrahim R. Kamara appreciated ‘the good gesture’ from Sierra Leoneans. “These donations came at the right time when schools have just reopened,” he said, stating further that his institution is challenged with finance to undertake vital programs. He said even the usual subvention from government is not forthcoming, they last received government subvention in the first quarter of 2019. Mr. Kamara calls for more supports from other organisations, the government and philanthropists.

Another administrator of the Cheshire Home Dr. Abdulai Dumbuya was also thankful of the support given to the kids by the Daughters of Sierra Leone.

There was joy in the faces of the kids and parents while receiving the donations. “This is a felt need for our kids,” lamented one of the parents, amidst appeals to other organisations to support the home.

Meanwhile, the organization – DAUGHTERS OF SIERRA LEONE is running a ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign to support women and vulnerable persons from Sierra Leone. The organization is calling on the public to support the campaign by donating whatever amount on the link below:
