Sierra Leone (Leone Stars) sensational midfielder John Bankole Kamara is all set for a successful debut at the Africa Cup of Nations against Algeria today in Douala, Cameroon. Sierra Leone hasn’t qualified for the Afcon finals since their last appearance in 1996 (about 25 years ago).

The defensive midfielder (John) and the entire Leone Stars squad are making their first appearance at the AFCON today in Cameroon. John believes “it’s a pleasure and honour” for him and his family.

“After 25 years we haven’t been able to qualify for the AFCON. And God made it possible for us this time. It is a historic moment and am blessed to be part of it.”

“It means a lot to me to play the AFCON, this tournament is the biggest in Africa so it’s a pleasure and honour for me and my family.” ~ John Kamara

Adding that, “so far I have been training and playing matches ahead of the AFCON tournament, it’s my job so I’m always ready and determined for a successful Afcon debut against Algeria today.”

John Bankole Kamara got his Leone Stars debut in a World Cup qualifier against Tunisia in 2013, and he has since been a regular call-up to the Sierra Leone National Football Team. His contribution was pivotal in ensuring Sierra Leone returns to the Africa Cup of Nations after 25 years.

John currently plays for Keshla FC in Azerbaijan. He started off his professional career at Tadamon Sour in Lebanon, moved to Apollo Sminirs FC and later Lamia FC in Greece, and then Latina Riga FC. He also signed for Kaisar FC in Azerbaijan and then Keshla FC where he played for almost 3 and a half seasons.

The spirited and determined midfielder will team up with his colleagues for a successful opener against the defending champions – Algeria today in the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

Sierra Leone has previously appeared at the Afcon twice (in 1994 and in 1996) but have failed to go beyond the group stages. Coach John Keister and his boys have challenged themselves to go beyond the group stage, and eventually win the trophy.
