First National Volleyball Club Championship kick-starts in Bo City


Maiden National Club Championships Serves-off amidst pump and excitement.

One Sporting Discipline, two genders, Sixteen (16) teams, sixteen (16) clubs, one hundred and ninty-two athletes, twenty-five officials, fifty volunteers, qualifying from eight of the sixteen districts in Sierra Leone – The National Club Championships Finals in the Southern City of Bo in numbers.

The finals of the said Championships served off today (22nd January 2020) in the Southern City of Bo following a Technical Meeting, Coaches and Referees Clinics on the eve of the event.

The event is a culmination of Regional Series which were launched in March 2019 in the Eastern District of Kailahun as hosts to the Eastern Regional Series with After Works -Male,(kailahun), Daramy Stars-Female (Kono) and Kamboi Spikers – Male and Female (Kenema) sharing the spoils for representation.

The Series moved on to the South with four clubs participating. It was a scoop for Air Force (double gender), Young Unit (male) and Bo Club (female).
The Western Area served-off with seven clubs on a home-and-away basis resulting in a clean sweep for Super Six (double gender) and Young Stars (double gender).

The Northern Region entered the race at the last minute but were able to organise a qualification event in Port Loko with Mark Spikers (Kambia), Bai Bureh Warriors (Port Loko) and Wusum Spikers from Makeni.

The die was cast for the National Board and the technical department to come up with a fitting FINALE to this effort – The National Club Championships Finals with Bo as the Host City, was the decision.

Amidst the challenges, apprehensions, doubts and feet dragging, the SPIRIT of CAN DO propelled everyone to today’s opening. Speaking to me immediately after the first whistle, Mohamed Benson Bawoh, ace Sports analyst and Referee Delegate for the event confessed, ‘I wept (tears of joy) when we got going this morning and it has been amazing here….’

Musa Kamara AKA Lanky is a pupil of CKC registered with Air Force. He expressed his excitement at the opportunity of realising his dream of playing top flight volleyball. “At six feet, eight inches, my best bet in sports is Volleyball’, he maintained, ‘and I am excited at the Golden opportunity which these championships bring’. He is been challenged for the much coveted prize of Young Player of the Tournament by Sorie Mansaray on loan to Kamboi Spikers and Sam-King.

The usual suspect on Match Day 1 for the Ladies are Binta Bah of Young Stars, Gladys M. Fofanah and Francess Lansana (the Beach Volleyball pair) on loan to Wusum Spikers and Isata Mainatain.

Teams with registered wins on Day 1 are Young Stars, Super Six, Air Force and Kamboi Spikers for the Men.
For the Women there are wins for Wusum, Young Stars, Super Six, Young Unit and Air Force.
