Sierra Leone Parliament backs Infinitum Energy Group for the provision of 38 megawatts for Freetown

On Tuesday 28th March 2023, the Infinitum Energy Group (iEg) made a presentation to the Sierra Leone Parliamentary standing Committee on Planning and Economic Development and Committee on Energy at the Committee Room of the House of Parliament in Freetown.

The presentation was done by the CEO of Infinitum Energy Group, Lindsay Nagle, on his company’s plans to provide over 38 megawatts of electricity for the Western Area, by converting waste to energy.

Lindsay illustrated how the plant will operate and also drew inferences to existing projects his company is running across the world, including Turkey, United States, Singapore, etc.

The Country Manager of Infinitum Energy Group, Yassin Kargbo further elaborated on the benefits that comes with this project. According to him, the provision of the 38 megawatts of electricity amount to a total investment of 180 million dollars, of which 2% of the total investment (about 3.6 million dollars) will go to the communities in the form of corporate social responsibility.

Adding that, his company will clear all the wastes in the City of Freetown, including the clearing of dump sites across the city. A process he said, will create more job opportunities and turning youth into entrepreneurs. Yassin gave an endless list of benefits that will be derived from this enviable project.

Yassin mentioned that his company, Infinitum Energy Group has been in the country for over two years, engaging government and local authorities on the need to adopt this project. “This shows how serious we are about this project.”

He further assured Parliament that the Infinitum Energy Group is a reliable company that is determined to provide Freetown with clean, affordable and consistent electricity supply when the project is approved by the Government of Sierra Leone.

The Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Musa Fofanah applauded the initiative from the iEg, noting that the country is in dare need of sustainable energy supply to stair development programs. He said his political party (Coalition for Change – C4C) will support such project for the benefit of Sierra Leoneans.

Making his statement, the Chairman of the Energy Committee, Hon. Christopher Keikurah Vandy also expressed his appreciation on the presentation made by the company, which he said is in line with the Government’s agenda for the provision of sustainable energy supply to Sierra Leoneans. Adding that, “I am more impressed with the aspect of clearing the wastes in the city. This is very important,” he said.

Hon. Vandy further noted that clearing and managing wastes has been a challenge for Freetown, therefore, having a company that will eradicate these wastes, will be a welcoming news. He further mentioned that he hopes that this project will not be a ‘white elephant’, as they have seen many companies came and went back without implementation.

His fears were however allayed by the company’s representatives.

Several other MPs also commended the nature of the project and wish it be brought to reality as soon as possible.
