Group A final matches of the WAFU Zone A Female Championship were played today 1st March 2020 in Bo and Makeni Cities. The host nation Sierra Leone played to a 1-1 draw with Senegal at the Bo Mini Stadium in Bo City, which saw the Sierra Queens crashing out of the competition, while Cape Verde won 3-0 against Guinea, thereby seeing the Cape Verdeans progressing to the Semifinals with Senegal in Group A.

Prior to the match, Senegal had already qualified for the semifinals with 6 points, leaving Sierra Leone, Cape Verde and Guinea to fight for a spot in the Semifinals. Sierra Leone had 2 points while Guinea and Cape Verde had 1 point each. Sierra Leone needed a win against Senegal to make it to the Semifinals, which would have prevented any of Guinea or Cape Verde from progressing. But unfortunately for Sierra Leone, Cape Verde won 3 nil against Guinea, which means, Senegal’s late equaliser stopped Sierra Leone from progressing to the Semifinals. Sierra Leone led in the 61 minute from a free-kick converted by Rashidatu Kamara, who is the best player in the Liberia Premier League, playing for Earth Angels Angels F.C. But that was not enough as Mama Diop scored a late equaliser in the 92nd minute.

Isatu Dumbuya, Sierra Leone’s goalkeeper won Player of the Match

Sierra Leone’s goalkeeper Isatu Dumbuya was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance.

Cape Verde had an easy ride over Guinea with Irlanda Lopez scoring a hat-trick in the match. She opened the scoreline in the 2nd minute of play, followed by two second half goals in the 72nd and 78th minutes, and she was crowned Player of the Match.

The final standings for Group A are as follows:

Team GP GD Pts

  1. Senegal 3 +3 7✔️
  2. Cape Verde 3 +1 4✔️
  3. Sierra Leone 3 0 3
  4. Guinea 3 -4 1
