Sierra Leone National U-17 Team (Sierra Stars) Crashed out of the Wafu U-17 Championship in Senegal

After a whooping 5-0 defeat to Mali, the Sierra Leone U-17 Team (Sierra Stars) has been eliminated from the WAFU Zone A tournament in Senegal. On the Friday 5th February 2021, Sierra Leone U-17 lose against Guinea Bissau in their opening fixture, which means, Mali and Guinea Bissau will progress to the next stage from Group B, after Sierra Leone failed to win any of their 2 matches in the group stage.

In today’s encounter, the Malians opened the scoreline in the 7th minute through Youba Koita, followed by a 2-0 lead by Mamadou Doumbia in the 16th minute of play. In the second half, a brace from Biadiogiu Diallo in the 49th and 84th minutes, plus another from Yacouba Maiga in the 67th minute, sealed a 5-0 defeat for Sierra Leone. Mali were the 2015 champions of this competition, they were also the runner-up in the 2015 U-17 World Cup.

Prior to the tournament, the Sierra Leone Football Association had prepared the boys in camp for over 4 months. Their impressive performance from both local and international friendlies gave hope to the nation.

Meanwhile, the team will return to Sierra Leone on Tuesday 9th February 2021.
