HOS Spotlight: How House of Stars promoted Salone Music in the show

For over a decade now, Salone could not compete with foreign music, which has enjoyed the privilege to dominate our local sounds. The influx and infiltration of foreign music, especially Afrobeats, has had a negative effect on our our music. This setback has also reflected in the livelihoods of our artists, who hardly make a living out of their crafts. It resulted in low streaming and airplays, low bookings, etc.

Over the years, the ‘Play Salone Music’ campaign was launched by a few individuals in a bid to increase airplay and more promotion for Salone music. This campaign was already dead on arrival, as there was stiff resistance from nightclubs and radio stations.

This prevailing challenge was effortlessly and partially solved by Kings Empire during the House of Stars reality TV show. No foreign music was played in the show for the whole period.

Salone music triumphed in the show throughout it 10-week broadcasting period, with no inroads for foreign music.

This feat is considered the biggest showcase for Salone music on a major platform.

The House of Stars show has proven to many Sierra Leoneans that Sierra Leone music can thrive again if only we make it our priority. This was the view echoed by the CEO of Kings Empire Valentine Mak King, whose intention of creating the show was to showcase what is 100% Sierra Leonean. From the music, culture, talents, etc.

Dozens of Sierra Leonean DJs also benefited from the House of Stars platforms. At least two DJs have been featured to play in the House. It’s either on the Thursday Night Pool Party or on the Saturday Night Party. These DJs were forced to learn how to play 100% Salone music on a bigger platform for over 3 hours non-stop.

The most incredible part of this was how the fans embraced and appreciated our music. They gave positive reactions during those sessions, calling for more. Interestingly, with the influx of afrobeats, many thought that our fans would no longer dance to Sierra Leone music, but House of Stars changed this perception for good.

It is imperative for all entertainers to celebrate and support Kings Empire/House of Stars for prioritising our local contents. It is also hoped that other events will replicate this approach.
