After a successful premiere at the Zanzibar International Film Festival in June 2022, and a second screening at the Ecrans Noirs International Film Festival in Cameroon in October, ‘SISTERHOOD‘ documentary film has also made it to the IDFA International Film Festival in Amsterdam, in The Netherlands, in November.

Sisterhood‘ is a Sierra Leonean documentary film, directed by Mohamed James Sessy Kamara. The film – ‘Sisterhood‘ recounts the story of twin sisters, Husainatu and Hassanatu, who decided to escape the bad economic prospects of their home country Sierra Leone, by emigrating to the Middle East to become domestic workers.

An excerpt from the film reads —

“This slice-of-life documentary takes us close to the action, set against the backdrop of a sweltering city. The twins’ confidential disclosures add depth to the domestic scenes, work at the market, and meetings with fixers claiming they can arrange visas for them. The result is an intimate and vibrant portrait with powerful moments of emotion that looks beyond the desire for a better future and the tensions between old traditions and new dreams, and shows how a new and powerful bond is forged between the two sisters. Sisterhood is part of Generation Africa, a documentary project centering on youth and migration.”

Appreciation from the audience was motivating and the film has given hope to more international filmmakers especially Europe to visit Sierra Leone in 2023. There are more film festivals calling for the documentary film SISTERHOOD.”
