Who is Kao Denero?

Kao Denero, whose birth name is Amara Denis Turay, is a Sierra Leonean hiphop icon. He was born in the airport town of Lungi, Portloko District, Northern Sierra Leone, to civil servant parents who had strong musical background.

Kao grew up hearing his dad constantly playing Congolese music, reggea; and mid 80s dance music like those of South Africa’s Evon Chaka Chaka and others, was on heavy rotation in his household.
Lucky dube, Bob marley and the reggea group culture are all Kao Denero’s early influence till he gradually got introduced to hiphop music in the early 90s.

Sierra Leone was flung into civil war which created an unstable situation for the rising hiphop star as he scrambled through Freetown hiphop talents showcasing events while dodging rebel bullets striving for daily survival.
Back then, he carved a name for himself as ‘Snoop Kao’ a moniker he gained from being a strong Snoop Dogg fan.
Nas, Mobbdeep, Notorious Big and Tupac are some of his all time favs in the genre of hiphop.

After gracefully escaping a brutal rebel war in his home country of Sierra Leone, coming to the US as a refugee was the genesis of Kao Denero.

His first album, the ‘Black Leo 4 life’ was released at a time when hiphop music was considered a white man’s sound in Sierra Leone.
Disappointments and set backs never stopped the young mcee from working.

Countless projects followed such as ‘Stories from Freetown’, ‘King of Freetown’, ‘Freetown’s Most Wanted’, ‘Da New Beginning’, ‘Da Blood Diamond Kid Story’, ‘Back To My Roots’, and ‘Now or Never’; just to name a few of the classics from his diverse musical catalogue.

His sounds can be best described as a true hiphop vibe laced with African instrumentation which makes for a perfect blend known as afro fusion.

His lyrical content fused with street survival tales of the every day experience of the African youth which brought him a cult-like following and a timeless Black Leo movement.
With collaborations with grammy winning acts like Shaba Ranks, Ghana’s Sarkodie, Nigeria’s Runtown, as well as, Jamaica’s dancehall guru Busy Signal; placed Kao in a class all by himself.

Before the release of his recent album ‘Kiss the Throne’, he concluded a Europe and Australia promo tour.

One of the only African hiphop acts that can gladly boast of filling his country’s national stadium of 45,000 capacity on regular basis.

Hiphop culture breeds controversy of battles among different artists and Kao Denero on countless ocassions proven his critics and naysayers wrong by dropping top notch diss classics such as ‘Kenyatta’ and ‘I am sierra Leone’; challenging his African counterparts with great continental reviews.

A new ep (Heroes) Is set to be released by the summer of 2021, a project that Kao is very much excited about.

An African act with great potential and superb work ethics, proven longevity and a preservist of the true essence of the hiphop culture.

Sky is the limit for a talent as Kao Denero, a complete gem from the small West African country of sierra Leone that was only known for Diamonds and war until the arrival of the legend.
