The 2020 Sierra Leone Premier League cancelled, with further decisions to be announced next week

Following a meeting held between the Sierra Leone Premier League Board (PLB) and the participating football clubs of the 2020 premier league, all 14 clubs have unanimously agreed to cancel the league with no absolute winner.

The League was put on hold in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, as it was the case the world over. In May this year, CAF asked its member Associations to decide on their League status regarding participation in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) in consultation with the PLB agreed to complete the league, hoping that the virus would have been declared over before the rains.

But it is now however clear that the virus is still around and the rains are here too, hence, there is no way the league can be completed before the next football season. The 14 Premier League clubs have agreed to cancel the league on mutual understanding, regarding the COVID-19 precautions measures which are yet to be lifted, and the rainy season.

Mohamed Benson Bawoh, PLB member

Meanwhile, PLB member Mohamed Benson Bawoh told Vertex Media that the clubs in top 6 league positions (Bo Rangers, Kamboi Eagles, East End Lions, F.C Kallon, East End Tigers and Diamond Stars) were asked about their preparedness for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively, only Kamboi Eagles, Bo Rangers and East End Lions accept to participate, if selected. “The Board has further asked the 3 clubs to decide which two clubs (among 3) will engage in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup. If they fail to make that decision before Monday 20th July 2020, the Premier League Board will have to decide who will engage in the 2 CAF club Championships.”
