Alonzo and Chelsea Supporters Club Freetown donate food items to 34 Military Hospital in Freetown

Popular UK-based Sierra Leonean singer, Alonzo Teah Abazi, Alonzo for short, in collaboration with the Official Chelsea Supporters Club in Freetown have today (2nd may 2020) donated food items to the Joint Medical Unit of the 34 Military Hospital at Wilberforce in Freetown Sierra Leone. The donated items include 15 bags of rice, 3 bags of onions, 2 cartoons of tomatoes, 5 2-gallons of cooking oil, 10 garbage buckets, 17 bundles of water and 2 bundles of tissue paper, worth millions of Leones.

The donation came as the country goes into a 3 day nationwide lockdown to curtail the spread of the global pandemic COVID-19, starting from Sunday 3rd May to Tuesday 5th May 2020. Alonzo and members of the Chelsea Supporters Club deemed it necessary to support staff at the 34 Military Hospital that treats most of the COVID-19 cases with food items. Making the donation on behalf of Alonzo and the membership, the Chairlady of Chelsea Supporters Club in Freetown Hannah Boima Will said they are “making the donation to complement the efforts of the medical team at the hospital.”

A member of the Chelsea supporters club Majeks Walker read a message from Alonzo where he commends the bravery the medics have so far put in the fight. He continued that:
“For this reason I am making this donation through my affiliation with the OFFICIAL CHELSEA SUPPORTERS CLUB FREETOWN to appreciate and honour our health workers at 34 Military Hospital who are risking their lives on a daily basis so that others may survive this pandemic.”

“In my capacity as ALONZO the artist and Club Secretary of the Official Chelsea Supporters Club Freetown, with additional support from members of the Club, we are donating this Plaque together with essential food items and toiletries to pay solidarity to our brothers and sisters who are dedicated towards the fight against the virus here at the 34 Military hospital in Freetown.”
“I am also donating an additional 15 bags of Rice on behalf of my family to the catering department at the hospital to help with meals for its employees on duty during this difficult times.”

Alonzo is a multi talented singer, songwriter and performer who got his breakthrough in music in 2008 when he released ‘Africa Unite’ and ‘Angel’ from Kallboxx Records. The ‘Africa Unite’ album brought him to prominence. He has won several awards and recognitions to his career. He couldn’t travel to Sierra Leone this April due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Receiving the donations on behalf of the Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Defence and the Branch Commander, the Matron of 34 Military Hospital Lieutenant Colonel Hannah O.E Pratt thanked Alonzo and his team for this wonderful gesture. “We need more energy and motivation to do our work, and that’s exactly what you have done. We appreciate the offer,” she said.

The event was graced by senior personnel of the Joint Medical Unit of 34 Hospital, members of the Chelsea Fan Club in Freetown and the media, including the organiser of the event, renowned journalist, activist and youth ambassador, Mohamed Basiru Sanusi of Star Radio and TV. The event was done in line with precautionary measures, ensuring social distancing.
