Sorieba Daffae is the co-founder and CEO of Crimesync Africa. He won the Innovating Justice Challenge 2019 and we recently had a chat with him on his entrepreneurial journeyInnovating Justice Forum 2019 at The Peace Palace โ€” Sorieba is announced winner

What does your startup do?

Crimesync is a web and mobile platform that allows justice sector stakeholders to manage their operations and deliver justice in a fast and fair manner. It was borne out of the desire to see a working justice system (especially the criminal justice system). There is a continuous caseload of matters in the judiciary, prisons are overcrowded, repeated offenders and growing lack of trust in the justice system. There are however multiple players responsible for the system to run smoothly โ€” Police, Public Prosecutions, Judiciary (Courts) and Prisons. They all operate in silos and claim to be independent. But to the citizens, they are dealing with a single state and just want justice to be delivered speedily.

What keeps you going?

Using insight from data collected to uncover the stories of prisoners who have overstayed in prisons without conviction. Seeing the smiles on the faces of victims who get speedy access to justice, and closure on their cases as a result of improved responsiveness and collaboration through technology Crimesync.

Is there anything you wish someone told you before you got started?

I wish I had a clear insight (supported by big data) about the enormity of the challenges in the justice sector. The numbers always reported in the justice sector are not just ordinary numbers but with people behind them who have families and some of them, breadwinners. The problems in the continent are mostly hidden behind familiar statistics that do not go further to tell the human stories behind them. Uncovering these individual human stories show the severity of the problems and further reinforces our resolve to deliver on our promise.

What has been the most important and least useful advice you have received?

The most important advice I have received in business is โ€œto visualize at the beginning of your innovation the major things that will happen in at least five years that may stop your innovation from growing or even existingโ€. This will expose the challenges ahead and create room for solutions when they occur.

The least useful advice I have received has been โ€œto have everything ready before attempting to enter the market.โ€

How do you maintain a work-life balance? What do you do to unwind?

Since we are at a stage of growing our interventions, I still spend most of my time working. Nonetheless, I do my usual jogging on Saturdays and spend ideal time with my Son (whom I have grown to have a special connection with).

Whatโ€™s your advice to members of the HiiL West Africa community?

Continue the good work and justle more to bring justice to all especially people in low-income countries. We are all Friendly Rebels now ๐Ÿ™‚
